Universe 1: Awakening

"I don't remember my name. Only that I must move." Universe 1 is Neutronium: Parallel Wars at its most elemental. Five mechanics, ten to fifteen minutes per session, no rulebook required. Heroes wake in an unfamiliar galaxy with only the instinct to explore. By the end of Universe 1, the core loop is established — and the questions begin.

What Unlocks in Universe 1

Movement Territory Claiming Artifact Collection Paradox X Wormhole System Artifact Sales (5 Nn)

Universe 1 introduces the five mechanics that underpin everything in the game. Movement via the custom D6 die. Territory claiming when you stop on an unoccupied segment. Artifact collection when you land on an artifact marker. Paradox X — three special artifacts that end the cycle. The wormhole system via Alpha Core, which appears somewhere on the 7-tile board. Heroes also discover that artifacts can be sold for 5 Nn — the first economic decision in the game.

The board at Universe 1 is 7 hexes (21 segments). Small enough to traverse quickly. Large enough that Alpha Core's hiding place creates genuine exploration. Every turn carries a decision: push toward the unknown hex or claim the adjacent unoccupied segment? That tension, small as it seems, is the foundation on which every subsequent universe builds.

The Story: Awakening

Heroes open their eyes to unfamiliar stars. No memories. Only instinct. The hexagonal galaxy stretches around them — six-sided sectors hiding Alpha Core somewhere in the fog. Strange artifacts scatter the universe, marked with a symbol that triggers unexplained fear. When three such artifacts are gathered by any combination of players, something happens. What exactly — nobody understands yet.

The first universe is about establishing presence. There are no armies, no buildings, no income streams. Just movement, exploration, and the growing awareness that you've been here before. The galaxy is small enough to hold in your mind, large enough to feel unfamiliar. And somewhere in that fog, Alpha Core waits — ancient, silent, full of questions that won't be answered until much later.

Strategic Guide — Universe 1

Universe 1 strategy is deceptively simple. Three decisions matter:

  1. Alpha Core location: Every time you pass a face-down hex, you gain information. Prioritize exploring to find Alpha Core — reaching it first gives the first Nn advantage. The wormhole jump from Alpha Core to any edge segment can reposition you faster than raw movement allows.
  2. Artifact type recognition: Learn to distinguish Paradox X artifacts from standard artifacts. Standard artifacts sell for 5 Nn. Paradox X artifacts trigger cycle end when three are collected. Whether to hold a Paradox X artifact or let someone else collect the third is the universe's primary tension.
  3. Segment presence: Claiming uncontested segments costs nothing and generates position for Universe 3 (when buildings unlock). Build spatial habits in Universe 1.
The most common Universe 1 mistake: racing directly for Alpha Core and ignoring segments. By Universe 3, territory claimed in Universe 1 becomes buildable. Players who explored and claimed segments in Universe 1 have a structural advantage when buildings unlock — the cost of that advantage is nearly zero at Universe 1, and it compounds every subsequent cycle.

What to Expect

Universe 1 sessions run 10–15 minutes for 2–4 players. First-time players spend approximately 5 minutes learning the mechanics before their first turn. By turn 3, everyone is playing independently. The cycle ends when the third Paradox X artifact is claimed — sometimes by accident. New players who haven't yet learned the significance of Paradox X artifacts can trigger an unexpected cycle collapse.

That moment of surprise — the cycle collapsing unexpectedly — is one of Universe 1's deliberate design features. It teaches the Paradox X mechanic experientially rather than through rules. The player who caused it remembers, and plays differently in Universe 2. This is the Recovered Memories tutorial philosophy in action: mechanics are learned by encountering their consequences, not by reading about them in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in Universe 1 of Neutronium: Parallel Wars?
Universe 1 introduces 5 mechanics in 10–15 minutes: movement (roll D6), territory claiming (stop on unoccupied segment), artifact collection, Paradox X (3 artifacts end the cycle), and wormhole system (travel via Alpha Core). Heroes awaken with no memory in a 7-hex galaxy and explore until three Paradox X artifacts are gathered.
Can beginners start directly with Universe 1?
Yes — that's what it's designed for. Universe 1 has no pre-reading requirement. The Recovered Memories tutorial system introduces all 5 mechanics through brief in-game prompts when they first become relevant. A new player can start their first turn within 3 minutes of sitting down.
How many hexes are on the board in Universe 1?
Universe 1 uses 7 hexes (21 total segments). The map expands significantly at Universe 6, when the board grows to 18 hexes (54 segments). The 7-hex board is specifically sized for 10–15 minute sessions.
What is Alpha Core in Universe 1?
Alpha Core is the ancient central station shuffled face-down among the hex tiles. It contains the wormhole — when a Hero visits, they can jump to any edge segment. It also enriches Neutronium at higher universe levels. Finding it first provides a navigation advantage.
