Colony Building

Colony Building is the territory improvement mechanic that converts raw segment control into escalating income. Each controlled segment can be upgraded through a three-tier chain — Base to Colony (up to three times) to Station — with Asters (Green race) unlocking a fourth tier in the form of the Advanced Station. The central strategic tension: build deep on secure inner segments, or expand to claim new territory?

The Upgrade Chain

Base
Starting structure
+1 Nn/round
1 per player at start
Colony ×1
Build cost: Nn
+2 Nn/round
3 variants available
Colony ×2–3
Build cost: Nn each
+3–4 Nn/round
All 3 required for Station
Station
Requires 3 Colonies
+6 Nn/round
Max tier (non-Asters)

Each tier requires Neutronium (Nn) to build and must be placed on a segment you control (occupation token present). Colony tokens come in three visual variants — Colony 1, Colony 2, Colony 3 — all mechanically equivalent; the variants exist for visual clarity when all three are present on a segment before Station placement.

The Advanced Station (Asters Only)

Asters (Green Race) Exclusive

Asters can build an Advanced Station instead of a standard Station. Rather than providing fixed +6 Nn from the building's segment, the Advanced Station unlocks technology tree branches that increase income per controlled segment globally. A fully activated Advanced Station tech path can increase all-segment income by a multiplier — making Asters the most powerful late-game economic scaler if they reach Station tier on a secured inner segment before Universe 9.

Build vs Expand: The Core Decision

Every Nn spent on Colony upgrades is Nn not spent on army movement, port construction, or territorial expansion. The relative value of these actions shifts significantly across universe levels:

Universe 1–3: Expand First

At Universe 1–3, the board has open territory. New segments deliver immediate income and positional advantage before the map fills. Colony upgrades on a single inner segment produce less value than the positioning gained by claiming three new segments at the same Nn cost. Build only Colonies 1 on secured segments; spend expansion budget outward.

Universe 4–6: Selective Deepening

Once radioactive deposit segments are identified and Nuclear Ports become available, the calculus changes. Deposit segments should receive port investment, not Colony chains — their exponential income path outperforms Colony returns at every tier. Standard segments in secure inner positions are where Colony 2–3 investment pays off. Avoid building Colony chains on contested border segments: they will be disrupted before they break even.

Universe 7+: Station Push

At Universe 7+, Station income becomes significant enough to prioritize on core segments. Asters players should reach Advanced Station on their most secure segment by Universe 9 to start the tech multiplier. Other races should have at least 2–3 fully upgraded Station segments by Universe 10 to compete with Asters' tech-scaling income in the endgame.

Component Note

Each player has 9 Base tokens, 21 Colony tokens (7 of each variant), and 6 Station tokens. The component count caps building investment — players who try to Station every segment will run out of Colony tokens. Prioritize which segments receive full upgrade chains before committing the component budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the upgrade chain?
Base → Colony 1 → Colony 2 → Colony 3 → Station. Each upgrade costs Nn and increases segment income per round. All three Colonies must be built before a Station can be placed. Asters can replace Station with Advanced Station, which unlocks global tech bonuses instead of fixed income.
What is the Advanced Station?
The Advanced Station is Asters (Green race)'s exclusive tier-4 building. Instead of fixed income, it unlocks technology tree branches that increase income per controlled segment globally — making Asters the best late-game scaler if Advanced Station is secured by Universe 9.
Should I build Colonies or expand first?
Universe 1–3: expand first. New segments give better return than Colony upgrades while the map has open territory. Universe 4–6: build Colonies on secure inner segments, invest deposit segments in Nuclear Ports. Universe 7+: push toward Station on core holdings to compete with late-game scaling.
Can Colonies be destroyed in combat?
Capturing a segment removes the occupation token but not building tokens immediately. You cannot collect income from buildings on segments you do not control. Sustained military pressure on a Colony-heavy segment denies income without requiring the buildings to be physically removed.
