Universe 2: Discovery
"These glowing deposits... there's something valuable inside. And I can FEEL the energy flows." Universe 2 introduces economic choice. For the first time, Heroes can generate Nn from the board itself — radioactive deposits yield 2 Nn when looted. And for 5 Nn, a Hero can pay to reroll their fate. The Cycle teaches that some things can be influenced.
What Unlocks in Universe 2
Deposit Looting (+2 Nn) Foresight (5 Nn → reroll) Progress Journal Cycle End Bonuses
Universe 2 adds the first economic mechanics. Radioactive deposits (marked hexes) now yield 2 Nn when a Hero stops on them. More importantly, the Foresight mechanic introduces a cost-benefit decision: spend 5 Nn to reroll your movement die. This is the game's first resource trade — you're converting Nn into a better position. The Progress Journal activates for mixed-experience groups, where experienced players start with reduced Nn. Cycle End Bonuses reward performance when Paradox X triggers, providing an additional Nn advantage carried into the next universe.
The Story: Discovery
First memories seep through the fog. Heroes begin to recognize things they don't remember learning. Radioactive deposits at the galaxy's edge — not just strange lights. Neutronium can be extracted from them. Where does this knowledge come from? As if someone has done this before. Many times.
And then: the ability to sense Neutronium streams before they carry you away. For a price, you can resist fate. Five Nn buys a second chance — a reroll that might carry you to the deposit you need, or to Alpha Core itself. The knowledge feels old. Instinctual. You have always known this was possible. You simply needed to remember.
Strategic Guide — Universe 2
Three key decisions define Universe 2 play:
- Foresight timing: Spending 5 Nn to reroll is valuable when you need a specific result for Alpha Core or an artifact. It's wasteful in open space. Learn to identify must-reach moments before committing the Nn cost.
- Deposit priority: Deposits yield only 2 Nn — modest in isolation. But deposits mark future Nuclear Port locations (available in Universe 5). Landing on deposits in Universe 2 helps you memorize the board for Universe 5 planning. A player who knows where every deposit is by Universe 3 has a significant advantage when ports unlock.
- Progress Journal calibration: If your group includes players with different experience levels, Universe 2 is when the Progress Journal activates. Calibrate the handicap now — it's easier to adjust early than to recalibrate at Universe 6.
What Changes from Universe 1
The board remains the same 7-hex configuration. The new decision layer: every movement now carries an economic cost-benefit dimension. Do you spend 5 Nn to reroll into a deposit that returns 2 Nn? That's a net loss of 3 Nn — but the position might be worth it. Do you accept a bad roll and preserve your Nn for something more critical? Universe 2 introduces the concept that Nn is a decision tool, not just a score.
This mental model — Nn as a resource to be deployed, not merely accumulated — is critical for every subsequent universe. Players who internalize it in Universe 2 approach Universe 5's Nuclear Port economics with fundamentally better intuition than those who treat Nn as a passive accumulation.
